Mauresmo to be honored Wednesday night in Paris

The recently retired Amelie Mauresmo, who is also the 2009 Open GDF Suez champion, will be honored Wednesday night in a ceremony at the tournament.

Serena Williams will not be in attendance. Williams has withdrawn from the tournament because of a leg injury she incurred at the Australian Open. Elena Dementieva, last year's finalist, takes over as the number 1 seed.

I am happy for Mauresmo. She really didn't get any celebration from the tennis community because she announced her retirement in the off-season.
Next: This is not meant as criticism and I am not anti-Serena. I feel that Serena is injured most of the time. That what injuries she has are difficult to heal or chronic. Thus playing "hard" in other tournaments or pulling out probably gives her the opportunity to somewhat heal and/or play through pain at the majors or tournaments like Miami or the Tour Championships.

That's true, Sunny. Serena has been up-front in saying that the majors are her priority, and that she will play other tournaments when and if she can. I just hope she doesn't withdraw from Charleston.

Diane,
Are you going to attend Charleston? Just curious because of your statement. I think it will depend on Serena's injuries during Miami which apparently caused her to pull out of later tournaments after Miami last year. I think she wants the Miami title back and wonder if she will play in Dubai.

I attend, and cover, the Family Circle Cup every year.
